S.F.'s California Academy of Sciences used to have an open room near the lobby with a ton of Macintoshes loaded with children's software. I always remembered trying out Kid Pix.

I mean, they’ll probably train a law LLM to find a way to attack it.

If you want to make a lot of money, this is the way.

That game is more of an idle / clicker game, and while I quite enjoyed the one from a few months ago about being a SWE in SF, the shtick wears thin quickly especially if you’re not in the niche that identifies with all the in-jokes.

link to the SWE one?

There's probably something to be said as well that modern work, at least in American culture, really chips away at work-life boundaries. I understand one might want to stay late at work for all sorts of reasons. But perhaps one shouldn't have to the detriment of one's own personal life, whether familial or otherwise.

Urbanization and industrialization is social and economic.

Did they at least rent a house? If not, how spacious was their apartment, how accessible was outside space for the kids to play in? If so, what was the percentage of their income was the rent?

I do think a lot of young people who grew up in suburbs mistakenly believe they need a house before they can have a kid, however, for those who have wrapped their heads around having a baby in an apartment space and cost is STILL a limiting factor. A 2nd bedroom is a significant cost increase, and you're competing with a huge market of people (young families, WFH ppl with home office, roommate setups etc). Also, once you outgrow that 2nd bedroom with kid #2 you have to move. We don't build 3-5 family bedroom apartments or condos or town-homes near job centers.

Isn't that a mixture of because they don't expect every child to survive to adulthood, and/or these are subsistence agricultural areas who need more manual labor?

The U.S. birth rate fell around 20% after the Great Recession and has never risen since. Seems like this is a pretty significant angle to focus on!

Never knew of Golding’s post-Flies bibliography. Sounds like it’s worth diving into! And wonder if his relationship to Monteith is worth some sort of dramatization.
