I'm glad I don't matter to you as long as I haven't yet killed myself. I'll try to keep that in mind while I'm dying inside and dealing with severe depression.

And Tesla needs to be held accountable for a security system than be easily defeated and puts innocent bystanders in danger.

Why is it Tesla's responsibility to defend the world against idiots? I'm pretty sure the Bart Simpson's of the world have been able to set cruise control and get in the back seat for decades.

The problem I have with Tesla is their mixed messaging: Overstating the capabilities of Autopilot (or FSD) when it suits their marketing efforts and then discounting those same systems as "under development" when they fail or are misused. It's not surprising that people get confused.

It takes gall to sell "Full Self-Driving" as an option for the past 5 years and have so little to show for it. I'm amazed there hasn't been more blowback from buyers.

> Overstating the capabilities of Autopilot (or FSD) when it suits their marketing efforts...

Do they? I’m aware of two general criticisms, but I’m not sure they are about overstating the ability of their existing product?

1) Elon’s pronouncements about FSD are usually over-ambitious both in capabilities and timelines... but that’s when he’s taking about what will be coming, not what had already been delivered to customers.

2) People getting upset with the term ‘autopilot’, as they think the term itself implies greater abilities than it delivers in reality. However, afaik Tesla are very specific about its actual ability.

Yes - agree. I’m interested to see how things turn out in the EU, where Tesla have sold a lot of cars but where even the older FSD software is limited compared to other countries (thanks to EU restrictions) and it seems there’s absolutely no prospect of the newer beta FSD being rolled out.

you kind of answered your own question with the next to paragraphs. Other car manufacturers don't call their adaptive cruise control 'autopilot' or 'full self driving'.

Yes, my point is their responsibility lies in their messaging, not in making it harder to defeat people leaving the driver’s seat.

I largely despised the commandline until I discovered z. Then I realized there are ways to make the commandline actually usable and it became an incredible, useful and user-friendly tool for me.

As a member of the general public, I absolutely believe it's on Tesla to ensure that their cars can't be tricked into driving completely without driver supervision.

I don't understand why you or others think it's fine just because somebody found a trivial way to defeat their checks. This is a severe public safety issue, since it's not just putting the occupants at risk.

> I absolutely believe it's on Tesla to ensure that their cars can't be tricked into driving completely without driver supervision

Do you also believe it's up to publishers to control how their cryptography libraries are used, and firearms manufacturers to predetermine each and every end user that will lay a finger on their products?

Are you using logic you know HN doesn't encourage that

Any normal car can be made to drive by itself if you put a weight on the gas pedal... If you are actively trying to circumvent the foolproofing you will always find a way.

That car will crash every time though which discourages doing it, the autopilot will only crash occasionally since it attempts to auto steer, which it makes it far more likely to be relied on and abused.

Might have been different hours ago, but now I see plenty of comments saying "but it's necessary".

I don't understand how that passed.

> (e) processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in the controller;

What's the point of GDPR if you can side-step it in this way?

That's always been the biggest fear with Covid, so that's not unexpected. Long ICU durations, lack of sufficient ICU spots and staff, high infection rate, low case fatality rate still means it can quickly overwhelm hospitals and lead to much higher rates of death overall.

People crying "it's just a flu" were always missing the point.

But there is another factor, only recently mentioned in Indian media.

The fear factor causes many of those with means to insist on hospitalization. This article talks about it in the context of celebs [1] but I've seen it among my relatives as well where healthy young adults with moderate/high Ct values are admitted on insistence of their parents or themselves.

I read similar reporting about self-arranged oxygen use as well.

That's interesting, thanks. Makes me wonder how widespread it is, but when spots are scarce and every bed counts, it's awful all the same.

Also ties back into the idea that governments need to act earlier than might seem necessary.

Which is a bit odd, since outside a few elite private institutions, Indian hospitals are dire and the same media regularly carries horror stories of rooms full of corpses etc.

> Monogamy is, more or less, a female fantasy. All women love the fact that birds mate for life. Meanwhile males fantasise about polygamy

Maybe there is a kernel of truth to it deep in our evolutionary/reproductive drive, but every guy I know, without exception, wants a monogamous relationship.

That says more about your circle of acquaintances than about guys in general. I've been around a fair number of non monogamish folks and plenty of guys are comfortable with their partners having other men and some explicitly encourage it or even find partners for them. r/Swingers and r/Cuckold and r/hotwife are huge communities.

As a guy, can confirm.

Don't mistake mate guarding for monogamy. Mate guarding is completely compatible with polygamy and is seen in other great apes. When men say they want monogamy, what they mean is they want exclusive access to their female. That doesn't mean they don't want other females in addition. Monogamy is something males trade to get exclusivity. It doesn't mean this is what they want.

If you truly believe men want monogamy then how do you explain porn? It's a huge industry and more an accepted part of life than ever. Do you think it's all being consumed by a few guys you don't know?

No, every guy I know, including myself, consumes porn. But it's not because I or they want polygamy. I'm not even sure how you're making that connection, since that's quite the leap.

How is it a leap? You're literally feeding the part of your brain that wants sex with other women.

> These changes will allow developers to bring their Win32 apps to the new Store without any changes to their existing code. In the past, developers were required to package their Win32 apps as an MSIX, and were forced to use Microsoft's own store-driven update and commerce platforms. This will no longer be necessary with the new Store.

I'm so relieved at this and hope these changes make their way to the Xbox app. Their store platform has been the worst thing I've seen in gaming in recent years. I've never had as much trouble getting games installed or updated as I have with the MS store. There's also their efforts to prevent users from modifying game files unless developers explicitly allow it, which would've prevented things like the absolutely necessary unofficial patches for Nier Automata.

MSIX packages have a lot of very interesting technical support for "overlays" that could be used for some very powerful mod/patch support if there was a good UI for it and maybe sideloading support with a good UI for it.

You couldn't just open File Explorer and expect to fiddle bits directly in Notepad.exe, but MSIX had the capabilities to create a "Package Explorer" to fiddle some bits in Notepad.exe (or whatever) and then package the fiddling into an overlay.

A couple games have used a subset of this tech to provide official mod support, but yeah it's overall a shame that Microsoft teased the idea of but never quite developed a general option/solution for "MSIX mods" at a high level despite having most of the platform tech for it.

So what does the store experience bring me then? My favorite part is the unified update management. If apps aren’t automatically updated, what value is the store bringing that an .msi isn’t?

Beyond automatic updating, the Store up until now guaranteed Clean Uninstall. Most of what is left of MSIX package restrictions after all the "Project Reunion" stuff so far and Win32 support is just to fit that guarantee. If the Store is just installing random EXEs and MSIs like it is 1999 again, how long until we get back to the "I need a cleaner app to clean up all the other apps I just uninstalled" nonsense?

Why would it be any different than it is now other than having a slightly more centralized platform? Do you use a cleaner now? Unless you're installing junk, you don't need one.

I actually have been using the Store since Windows 8. There have been apps I've tried that I never would have installed from an EXE or an MSI. Relatedly, I've also got less tech savvy family that I've been able to recommend stick to "S Mode", install everything from the Store, and I don't worry about them calling me in a few months that something is mysteriously broken or that the system is full of junk they can't uninstall.

It's a huge difference if the Store is just another distribution point for random EXE/MSI installers that can do whatever they want, install where ever they want, and may or may not clean up after themselves on uninstall.

Favoriting episodes, bookmarks, auto-queues, prioritizing podcasts, downloading episodes for archival purposes, playback history, list of all episodes in progress, stripping empty audio, crazy amount of configurability, and an interface that isn't terrible. I'm sure there are a bunch of other features I'm forgetting.

I've tried Spotify. It's not a podcast player. It's an audio player with none of the conveniences of a modern podcast player. If all you want to do is listen to podcasts, I'm sure it's fine, but it's not in any way sufficient for my needs. At this point, Podcast Addict is the only app out there that I can stand to use.
