For example, running very large trials in a short time is very high effort.

Worth it

It's a trade-off: better info versus handling an immediate crisis. If it's not an immediate crisis, you can take more time.

Engineering is trade-offs.

People are dying of these diseases every day

And killing them with an insufficiently tested treatment is not optimal.

For patients. But maybe not to the companies which would have to pay for these large expedited trials

Where can I see the DOE having a stake in Cymer?

Department of ENERGY not the DoD.

The EUV IP which Cymer owns was originally part of EUV LLC, which was an LLNL [0], Sandia [1], and Intel [2] initiative as part of a CRADA. Cymer eventually began working on EUV as well building on EUV LLC and SEMATECH's work, and was eventually purchased by ASML after the Dept of Commerce and DoE backed their acquisition in 2013 [4], but included Cymer in additional CRADAs [3], ongoing projects [5], and maintain Cymer as a separate operating unit [6] within ASML.

It is these CRADAs that allow the DoE to exert its muscle on IP ownership and knowhow, as they are essentially a license of IP and personnel on US DoE terms [7] while also allowing for private partners to commercialize.

I don't see a stake by the DOE?

What would constitute a "proof of citizenship"? Would a passport be enough, for example?

Outside of coding/non-physical areas, the impact can be quite muted. I haven't seen much impact on surgical procedures, for example (but maybe others have?).

Feeding scenarios is not without challenges as some things, for example, smell, would be "pre-processed" by humans before fed into the AI, I think.

What is an example there?

Are there no differences in obligations between the two (e.g., draft)?

It’s going to wildly depend on the countries, but between the UK and Ireland, no.

You do have to swear allegiance to the monarchy in the UK, which some people may feel more or less positively about.

It's kinda bizarre that we make people who want to become citizens swear allegiance to the Monarchy

I’m British and have never sworn, or ever will swear allegiance to the Monarchy

I believe the UK should be a republic in the Irish sense i.e. no monarchy and a symbolic president

Could the host nation then draft EU immigrants in return for voting rights, for example?

Yes. Thats the decision that we need. Right? Do we want to actually make this pseudo political union into a proper political union? Because it is seeming more and more than instead what we will get is break up of the union.

I don't know enought about theoretical physics: what makes it a significant contribution there?

It's a nontrivial calculation valid for a class of forces (e.g. QCD) and apparently a serious simplification to a specific calculation that hadn't been completed before. But for what it's worth, I spent a good part of my physics career working in nucleon structure and have not run across the term "single minus amplitudes" in my memory. That doesn't necessarily mean much as there's a very broad space work like this takes place in and some of it gets extremely arcane and technical.

One way I gauge the significance of a theory paper are the measured quantities and physical processes it would contribute to. I see none discussed here which should tell you how deep into math it is. I personally would not have stopped to read it on my arxiv catch-up

https://arxiv.org/list/hep-th/new

Maybe to characterize it better, physicists were not holding their breath waiting for this to get done.

Thank you!

Not every contribution has immediate impact.

That doesn't answer the question. That statement just admits "maybe" which isn't helpful or insightful to answering it.
