Is it accurate to call this WSL3? WSL 2 was released in 2019, but WSL 2.0.0 was released in 2023 https://github.com/microsoft/WSL/releases/tag/2.0.0

It happens to be the major version reported by `wsl --version` on my system.

    NRR-WT1; wsl --version
    WSL version: 3.0.1.0
    Kernel version: 6.18.40.1-1
    WSLg version: 1.0.79
    MSRDC version: 1.2.7214
    Direct3D version: 1.611.1-81528511
    DXCore version: 10.0.26100.1-240331-1435.ge-release
    Windows version: 10.0.26300.9457
    NRR-WT1;

No I think it's more accurate to call it WSL Containers, or WSLc, but the release is indeed WSL 3.0.*.

There's a big gap between the top 2 solvers (Yiheng Wang and Xuanyi Geng) and everyone right now. Yunzhi Lian is 4th in the world.

It was changed to '46 today

> It was helped by using the Debug symbols accidentally(?) compiled into the final version of the game.

Don't think this was the case, what helped was it being compiled without optimizations.

> Wicked For Good

Is this an antithesis to Don't Be Evil?

> (Flascc/Alchemy(?) I forgot all the names this went through)

Crossbridge was its third and most recent name.

Pepper.js is another interesting project from around this time that didn't pan out.

https://github.com/google/pepper.js/

Wasn't pepper the P in PNaCl?

The P in PNaCl is Portable.

Pepper was a pun on Native Client (since NaCl = salt). Pepper Plugin API (PPAPI) was Google's more secure version of NPAPI (Netscape Plugin API). Flash Player was essentially the only thing using NPAPI/PPAPI by the end of its life.

The most common plugins were Flash, Silverlight, Adobe Reader, and the Java applet plugin, and I think all of those were in mildly common use when plugins were on their last legs.

Now you can have all of them running on top of WebAssembly, companies even pay for support.

Have you read the Wikipedia page recently? It was less complete a couple of years ago

I looked at it today and it is more fleshed out but still incorrect. For example:

> In 1994, the company began development of a port of Doom.

No, we were never porting Doom and we used none of Doom's code or resources. And I didn't propose to tone down the violence. The game was intended to be a fun first-person shooter in the same spirit as Doom but that was the only connection.

Microsoft was involved in a high-profile antitrust suit with the Department of Justice at the time. They were understandably sensitive about the potential PR impact of this type of game shipping with Windows and proposed gameplay design changes to reduce the violence.

Are you reading the right page?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinematronics,_LLC

Hasn't been edited since December 2024. Has never mentioned DOOM.

This page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_Tilt!_Pinball

Indeed the sources say Doom clone, not port.

Someone with the user name "Hemiauchenia" edited the Wikipedia page shortly after I left my comment here.

Yes this isn't clean-room. Though none of these decompilation projects have been resolved in court yet. re3 (GTA3/Vice City decompilation) developers were sued by Take Two but they settled out of court.

https://www.pcgamer.com/take-two-dismisses-lawsuit-against-g...

I didn't know about this. Not sure if the developers settled or take two gave up. I would guess the latter as the decompilation / port scene seems to be going strong. Though I don't follow it that closely.

There's openrw which doesn't use re3 code.

Just to note, Microsoft provides debug symbols for Pinball

Pretty sure it would be working in the Wayback Machine, if archive.org had configured it right.

I am very sad that it isn't, and I really wish that I'd figured out how to get an archival copy back when it was still available.

All the SWFs are archived (which is often not the case on Wayback). Just when the program is requesting to load one, archive.org is returning an HTML-wrapped file instead which fails to load. It would be quite easy to add to Flashpoint.

Managed to find them at:

https://www.pccc.com/downloads/junk/cool/bembo/

will have to look into how to get them to play again....
