To each their own, but hard to grasp why. It's one the most expensive assets you own. Why wouldn't you want to monitor it at least?
Do you also not have house monitoring (you don't need to control every light switch (which can be useful to have lights on when you get back home), but things like temperature, humidity, power use, air quality, water use/leaks is far cheaper than 1 insurance claim).
Different person, but I don't want a car that has an app precisely because it's so expensive. Cell phones her replaced way more often, and the people running the app stores are very aggressive about not supporting old apps. So within maybe half the life of the car, the app will no longer install.
Yeah, my phone barely goes out of date and can't install some apps. My wife's phone is too old to install any. I'm not going to accept an obligation to keep installing new and worse OSes (eg liquid ass) on my phone until I have to get a new phone, I'm just not going to use apps.
All devices I own can be monitored, maintained and adjusted on the device itself. I prefer that over an app that will eventually not be supported on my phone anymore or one that moves to a subscription based service. The phase-out of 3G also showed a downside of connected devices, older cars suddenly lost all their connectivity.
No I don't have house monitoring. I have a metal key that I use to enter it. When I enter the home, there is a rectangular box that I press with my finger, and it turns on the light. The A/C (that also does heating) can be set to a certain temperature with a hardwired box on the wall. That is all the tech I have at home.
With a car, I prefer a car that I can monitor on the dashboard or center console itself. Fault codes can be read over OBD with standardized equipment. I have owned cars over 15 years old that could still tell me what was wrong without needing an app or subscription.
I have those things in my house but it's all local using home assistant and no vendor can monitor it. I can access it remotely but only by vpn.
I'd want the same for my car if I had one. No manufacturer remote access. Any 5G module in it I would remove. Unfortunately the EU mandates ecall now but I'd just put that back in for the yearly car test.
And I agree some sort of open source solution would be nice for cars too. Especially with flood of Chinese EVs some sort of legal+technical framework is needed.
Perhaps even government agency that handles that sort of thing for you.
But until something truly secure and open source comes about - I'll trust Tesla instead.
If you ever have a problem with your Chinese EV, just call the Ministry of State Security. I'm sure they can scan it for fault codes. They're probably already monitoring it.

What an insane take. We've been able to monitor our vehicles almost as long as we've had vehicles. You know when you turn your car on and all those pretty lights come up? That's not just because it looks cool.
The upside of using a platform for EV and hybrid engines is that it typically looks a lot better aesthetically than an EV only platform.
Just look at the Mercedes S class versus the EQS. The EQS was ground up designed as an EV and because of the design decisions made in that process is the ugliest Mercedes designed ever.
Same with the Audi A6 which was always a masterclass in design and now is a generic blob of a car with the new EV only model.
A lot of the way EVs look has to do with reducing drag, which extends range. Hence the “blob” shape that the parent is talking about that is common to EVs - and the Prius before that. Or retractable handles.
So not just an aesthetic choice, although carmakers do seem to “lean in” to that aesthetic and go all in on the futuristic look with EVs.
They're already at the kind of range I'd be happy to trade off the other way.
I don't need 400 mile ranges; I'm happy to half that to get a shorter front so I can see the corners, a squared off hatch at the back, and proper headroom. Basically give me a smaller Transit van.

Its reliably improves as the British engineering is reduced... These EV trucks are going to be running for 100 years. No crazy Chinese firmware, no bonkers Musk autonomy, charge them from the solar on your roof, enough torque to pull a semi trailer out of a ditch.
It's precisely because these EVs don't repackage android or attempt to remain internet connected that will allow them to keep working on the software side. Embedded firmware (for ISO/IEC 15118 comms with the CCS2 port) for charge controllers is about as sophisticated as it gets.
Yes, I have very positive interactions with people outside of the US, and (hopefully!) most of them would say the same about me. That doesn't mean that what my government is doing isn't really shitty though, or that I would expect the other 350 million people around me to be uniformly positive to interact with. For starters, a lot of them voted for the government that's being like this, and although that doesn't necessarily mean that they would interact poorly with people from countries that are having to deal with the fallout, I wouldn't blame someone for not wanting to give them the benefit of the doubt, or even not wanting to give me the benefit of the doubt (I can't prove how I voted, and even if I could, it wouldn't be unreasonable for that to be considered insufficient for exculpability).
My honest impression is that most of the time when governments are at odds, the people living in the countries will often not share those sentiments when interacting at an individual level. During the brief period when TikTok was unavailable in the US (before the ban kept repeatedly getting pushed until they finalized Ellison et. al. acquiring the US rights for it), a lot of people apparently went onto a Chinese social media app as a silly form of rebellion, with both sides basically agreeing the whole thing was silly and that even they their governments thought they were enemies, the citizens didn't have to.

Since when is Tesla software great? Every time I get into a Tesla I have to spend five minutes to pair my iPhone over Bluetooth like it’s 2010. I then have to place my phone on the wireless charging pad and enjoy navigation on the small screen of my phone since it doesn’t support CarPlay. I have to make a playlist of my music before the trip since I can’t control my music safely.
There isn't anything to measure if the poop is unable to leave the end-user.
