Yet one more bafflingly stupid decision from the cruelest and stupidest administration the US has ever seen. Perhaps electing a failed businessman and malignant narcissist and surrounding him with yes men was a bad idea? The cost of eggs certainly hasn't gone down.

This being flagged feels consistent with the attitudes of Silicon Valley and tech leadership generally.

This is guaranteed to blow up international trade with the US and one thing is for damn sure - that will silicon valley suffer enormously. It does not make sense.

I agree. The US is fast becoming an international pariah. Every policy implemented by this administration is regressive, ill-advised and/or cruel.

The GF and I have had multiple conversations about how all these seemingly intelligent people don't: 1) care about anybody else; 2) realize that this too will negatively affect their lives; and I've come to the conclusion that these people are devoid of empathy, and they are narcissists who view themselves as being too important and powerful to be messed with. They'd never do that to me! That would never happen to me!

I don't agree. They're not stupid and they're out to give advantages to themselves. More money, more power, more ... and these actions, especially if justified like you do, will absolutely fail at that.

If the US as a whole becomes poorer, being a billionaire will mean a lot less.

I mean I agree they're lacking in empathy, right. But this is not a cartoon. Lacking in empathy is not a goal in itself for these people. It's just not.

It does make sense if they position themselves to take hard power. That’s worth a lot more than money alone and worth losing even large amounts for.

I do not think it will. The Democratic Party is not an opposition party in its current form. The GOP will likely hold on to power in a fashion consistent with historical authoritarian takeovers.

The DOJ under this administration will abet these violations. Every department that would normally serve as a check is now headed by a feckless loyalist.

They're going to continue abusing people, injuring them, killing them and violating their rights because there's no accountability. The administration endorses this behavior.

Dissolve ICE, dissolve DHS, impeach Noem and prosecute and or bar every single ERO agent from future public service.

The administration labelled "the left" domestic terrorists, while promoting and pardoning domestic terrorism. There needs to be serious accountability when the Democrats retake power.

The problem there is that the democrats are ideologically comparable to the Republican Party of the 80s while the Republican Party of today is now a fascist death cult.

I was brutalized by DHS/CBP when Biden was in power, they won't do shit, and even worse when it happened not even the leftists gave a damn and even on places like HN people suggested I deserved it. No one gave a single shit about my story about being brutalized by DHS until Trump came into power, up until that moment only my own family would believe it. I remember telling the exact damn story on HN pre-and post trump -- post trump I got hundreds of upvotes and pre trump when it actually happened it was almost all people suggesting I deserved it and that I wasn't "telling the facts."

There will be zero accountability because the Democrats also need the help of those manning the federal machinery to implement their own programs. Even if they might be using it for far less reprehensible things. Civil service reform assures us of that -- it's almost impossible to fire most civil servants so best to just negotiate to overlook misdeeds in exchange for them implementing your campaign promises.

The promise made was that they were going after "bad people", e.g., murderers, rapists, etc. I don't think many people have a problem with that.

But that's not who they're going after, it's everybody, with a focus on ethnic cleansing. It is no longer hyperbole to compare what's happening now to Germany in the 1930's.

Agreed. They've made it quite clear that they intend to label any dissent or protest as terrorism and use force to suppress it. I don't see how the situation will improve. Perhaps if the 3.5% rule holds true https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3.5%25_rule

The promise that was made was to go after the type of people you described - first. Not to stop after them.

This is not yet something most Americans have caught onto. The DHS made a tweet fantasizing about deporting 100 million Americans (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/dhs-100-million-deportations-...) - which is roughly what deporting all non white people would look like. And Elon Musk posts white supremacist content daily - and I mean this literally. For example he called for “white solidarity” (https://people.com/elon-musk-shares-startling-post-endorsing...) and has also repeatedly called for remigration which is literally defined as “ethnic cleansing” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remigration).

The Nazis also ruined the swastika for everyone, even the innocent "good" one that goes the other way and isn't tilted on the corner.

Sure. Solidarity as a whole is even better.

I don’t want a framework that’s coupled to a hosting provider.

It's not and will probably never be.

If you want some precedent look at Hono. Initially it was just for the CF Workers runtime (not developed by CF). Then CF started using Hono internally and hired the dev to work on Hono full time. Hono works on any JS runtime.

https://hono.dev/docs/concepts/web-standard

I suppose we’ll see — I’d be surprised if the whole promise of nothing will change don’t hold over the long term. I don’t love that Astro is tied to a narrow set of hosting providers either.

Astro runs on many JS runtimes. It can be deployed anywhere.

ICE didn't exist prior to 9/11. There's no reason it can't be dissolved.

that's a fair point

You can enforce immigration laws without shooting people in the face, ramming into their vehicles, ripping them out and putting them in illegal chokeholds, shipping them to prisons in El Salvador, firing tear gas at legal observers and on and on.

It also wasn't an agency prior to 9/11. It should be dissolved. All ERO agents should be prosecuted and or barred from all future public service.

Oh interesting, i didn't know it was a post 9/11 agency.

It was born out of INS but it and DHS have its roots in the security apparatus that developed thereafter. It's become progressively worse leading up to the weaponization we're seeing now.

Interesting that consular officers can use their own personal discretion to block someone’s visa due to their age or conditions like obesity. I am betting more of America is obese and a net drain on taxpayer funds than immigrants are. So this just strikes me as discriminatory. The fact that it relies on individuals in these jobs deciding what they’re okay with, opens the door wide open to all kinds of abuse.

How’s this discussion ?

They probably meant to link to the flagged HN thread where that article was submitted: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46618809

Indeed.

They're supposed to. They've been breaking into homes without them.
