Backups with nowhere to restore to don’t do you much good.

They just re-host it on chinese clouds. Most of european part of russia dont have mobile internet for years now and it did not change much for people living there.

Adding 200ms of latency wont affect anyone living much and China will happily sell datacenter capacity to it's vassal state.

coming soon on alibaba: data-centre-specific bomber drones, sales to all parties, no questions asked!

The one constant of Trump is he'll fuck anyone over. He's not capable of having buddies, unless you count Epstein.

Have you asked Claude to critique this code? It's... not super complimentary. There are design anti-patterns I haven't seen in two decades.

It runs on plain LAMP without 400 node_modules to show a task list. The 2000s called, and their stack still boots faster than ours.

Look again.

https://github.com/edrisranjbar/lifeos/blob/c45f326716c5d89f...

The attachment system runs a `CREATE TABLE` call every time it's included, as a simple example of why this is a big mess.

I have zero objection to a plain, no-JS LAMP PHP site. But that can be done cleanly.

The purpose of node_modules is to reduce the surface of ancillary code which one must maintain.

This allows the maintainer to focus on business logic, delegating universal, undifferentiating concerns to projects that respect those concerns as their own raison d'etre.

Thus is all running software respected as central, and not peripheral, during its development. This raises the quality of the code—increasing functionality, and reducing defects.

Oh I thought it was to increase the chance of supply chain attacks and being caught in dependency hell.

20 sub agents, 20 doms.

One example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Richard_Montgomery

> When the condition of the munitions was originally assessed there was concern that copper azide, an extremely sensitive explosive, would be produced through reaction between lead azide and copper from fuze components (lead azide would react with water vapour, rather than liquid water, to form hydrazoic acid, which could react with copper in the detonating cap to form copper azide).

> An investigation by New Scientist magazine in 2004, based partly on government documents released that year, concluded that the cargo was still deadly, and could be detonated by a collision, an attack, or even shifting of the cargo in the tide. The deterioration of the bombs was so severe that they could explode spontaneously.

> only needs to watch the bomb squad guy rip a shell out of the ground with a shovel and no specific care given once before they realize it's best if they just do that damn job themselves

Do you apply this logic to surgery, engineering, etc.?

"The expert makes it look easy, therefore it must be easy."

I know it's really easy to make this out to be big and scary and complex from your ivory tower but the person doing this has already seated a tractor tire with starting fluid, used a forklift as a work platform, welded up the leak on the air compressor and half a dozen other things that you said would kill them that day and it's not even noon. Using the leaf blower and a broom to dig an artillery shell that didn't go off 5min ago when you hit it with a piece of machinery isn't that much of a stretch. These people live in a different (better) world than you.

Please make sure they put your HN username in the obit so I can read it from the “don’t touch the unstable WWII bomb without knowing how to manage it” ivory tower.

None of what you listed implies familiarity with bombs. They did not said that farmers are dumb, they said they are not experts on safe bomb destruction.

I never said they were familiar. I said that the realities of their daily lives mean they don't really care about what the same people who fill the internet comments with sneering takes about how all sorts of mundane things these people do is wrong or unsafe. They simply don't care what you or I or anyone else here thinks.

Regardless, farmers across the EU pull thousands of tons of shells out of the ground every spring. They, as a demographic, have infinitely (because anything is infinitely more than zero) more experience than some out of touch office workers who read the official recommendations the local bomb squad writes up and screech about the fact that nobody follows them.

Reality of the farmers life mean they do not care about potential WWII bomb exploding while they are right there? There is difference between a shell (a projectile) and a bomb. And reality across EU is that farmers and construction workers do care about not blowing themselves up.

Frankly, the only out of touch person here is you - likely office worker who imagine that all farmers are irrational macho men. And someone who genuinely thinks that if some safety rules are skipped for comfort, then surely most will try to hit the bomb with random equipment to see whether it blows.

You are intentionally misconstruing my point in an attempt to used craft a comment that appeals to others. There is no moral code under which this is not bad behavior that reflects poorly on those who engage in it.

The farmer or backhoe operator or whatever does not typically know there is a shell or whatever there until after it's been hit with machinery. This is not the year 1100. People are generally not engaging the ground with hand tools. They are engaging it with buckets and implements that do their work in bulk. When you encounter anything man made it's usually only after you've moved it about. "Hey that's an odd looking rock, oh wait that's a shell". Once it's already been hit by your bucket or whatever the sensible thing to do is put it down somewhere far away, call it in, and keep doing whatever you were doing in the meantime.

Hook it up to voice control so I can put an iPad in the back window of the car and tell other drivers… things.

I had this idea ten years ago. Told my parents it’d be nice to say “have a good day” and my moms initial reaction was she’d say “** you”. End of that idea.

Ouch, life long child trauma created. No idea is good enough to impress mum.

i think it was the message she would put on the screen, not her reaction to childs invention

I considered something similar with LED lights but I deemed it illegal in Germany

I thought of something similar to both. A display would be nice but car to car/peer to peer communication would work too. It'd be a nightmare though considering I know how depraved the internet is. It's not anywhere near as anonymous but I don't think people generally care as much as they probably should.

Won't it say

> You are a poo-emoji bomb-emoji #!! driver

?

I am exercising my Fifth Amendment right to silence at this time.

It can be fun to watch prices a little before and during Prime Day. I've seen quite a few things on my wishlist go up in price the week before, then a "Prime Day Deal" that's higher than the original price was.

Yes. In the UK they go up a month before, because we have consumer protection laws that required retailers of e.g. white goods to have maintained the higher price for any announced discount for at least a month. So you knew that sellers thought there would be (at that point unannounced) Deal Days, because the prices of some things went up 20% back at the beginning of September.

I had ordered a new wireless charger about two weeks ago (without Prime). a day or two before it was meant to be shipped (about a week before Prime day), my order was cancelled "due to lack of stock". I go to the original product page and what do you know, it's in stock but $3 more expensive. Looking again today, it's on the Prime sale for the old price.

Scummy behaviour at best, and illegal at worst.

There's https://camelcamelcamel.com to check how prices developed.

There's still the possibility of shenanigans with different models that can be overpriced for long so they look like a good deal when they get a normal price

Nature can't and doesn't try everything. It also potentially discards old things.

If both sided life was prevalent early on, and one outcompeted the other, it may have gone extinct a billion years back. New life would have some difficulty evolving in an environment where existing life is well established.

Stuff our immune system doesn't recognize is potentially useful for things like vaccine delivery. But it's also useful for a potential pathogen.

I don't like the idea of creating microorganisms our immune systems can't recognize.
