Worse than resigned, people are happy about it. There's discussions about this over on Reddit too, where the users are even more overwhelmingly in favor of it. "If it didn't do this, 'Siri, call Jenny' wouldn't work! And it wouldn't be able to automatically tag Jenny in photos!" etc. People think this is fun and not creepy?
This lazy give-me-convenience-or-give-me-death thinking is so weird. I want my devices to be completely dumb. I don't want them to know anything about me. I don't want them to think for me or make decisions for me. I store data so I can retrieve it, not for the computer to "learn" from it. Leave me the hell alone.
Yes, repeating my comments from the other time this was disingenuously posted ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50310796 ) , this should be flagged if not removed. The way these posts are being titled is misinformation and rage bait.
It's also disappointing to see how many users here, people who you'd expect to at least have a mild familiarity with the internet and how it works, don't read the article, comments, or sometimes even the entire OP. They see a title that supports their biases, make wild assumptions, and immediately move to spitting vitriol into the comments.
Very interesting how eager people are to accept headlines at face value when they support biases, before reading the article or trying to understand what's actually happening.
Geez, I know nobody here clicks through and reads articles before commenting, but are we not even reading the posts now?
>we found that the third party may have accessed your email address... last 4 digits of your credit card and country, credit card issuer, credit card expiry date, payment history
OP> Great reason to use <...> virtual cards wherever possible and online
> but there are hardly any adequate alternatives for the rest of the world, as far as I know.
Maybe start with your bank?
My local (Central European) bank offered virtual cards service yesterday to which I declined setting them up on site, will strongly reconsider now, thanks!
>My bank is the opposite of yours. They used to offer a similar service but shuttered it a few years ago.
Maybe a good time to call up the bank (or other banks) and ask them if they provide this or any other service that would prevent you from needing to cancel physical cards in case of these ever-increasing security incidents?
Late edit: just checked it out and the virtual cards can be ordered via the banking app, either permanent virtual or one-time use where the card auto-expires after the purchase has gone through. That's really neat! (Not gloating but sharing what I've learned, hope you can find similar security in your bank offerings).
I did some research and corroborated with Claude. No banks in my country offer anything akin to Privacy.com. There are a few "virtual card" services but they have limits that make them virtually unusable.
I doubt I'll have any influence on the products any one bank in my country offers, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
The numbers that are on every check I’ve ever written? I presume that info is public knowledge, and that if there’s any fraud, my bank will reverse it.
Right, this should be flagged. It's blatant misinformation and rage bait. How is a random post on a random message board even considered a valid source. OP here should take the advice of the mod on the board they linked to, where the thread was locked:
>it's a good idea to just not post things we don't understand. Let's not be so in a rush to break news that it becomes misinformation.
Ironic comment from someone who literally just submitted an AI slop report and went so far as to give it a website and cutsey name to attempt to feign legitimacy and skill behind the "researcher."
>...which is the exact shape of a "Destructive Remote DoS" in the VRP's own rules.
The trend of Claude referring to everything as having a "shape" irrationally annoys the hell out of me. What an absolutely idiotic way to say "X is like Y."
This trend upsets me so much, because my brain actually does work like that, concepts and ideas exist in 3d space and have likenesses to each other.
I used to write like this, but I can't anymore. (I suspect enough people did in the training set that that's why it ended up being part of the vernacular.)
Lots of comments saying the target audience for this is kids and very casual "Insta and Email" users. But they're not releasing it on the Neo or Air. This is, for now, the "proLED" model only. The base model is $2800 and if you max out the options it goes up to $14,000 (though $7,000 of that is storage).
I really don't understand who they think is going to buy this.
Does your Windows device fold, or do you actually reach up across the keyboard to touch the screen? If these things folded into a tablet mode I might consider it, but stretching your arm out across the desk and keyboard at an awkward angle seems like it would get uncomfortable pretty quickly.
If I'm using my laptop at my desk the lid is always closed. The only time I have access to the touchscreen is when it's portable, which means it's right in front of me on the desk and reaching it is trivial.
Like the OP, I've received multiple "You haven't voted yet!" messages from a state I no longer live in. I also received two messages today saying "Can you please rush in even just $1 right this second to help us get voters to the polls?"
Are these messages effective on a significant enough portion of the population to be worth sending? It feels like it would have the opposite effect and piss people off. Who gets a text like this and goes "Oh wow yes I better send this person a dollar right away!"
There has been some good investigative reporting on this.
The answer is yes, they do make a lot of money off of this. But the details are awful. Only like 12% of the revenue actually makes its way to productive campaigning. Donors are older on average than the average voter. And they hit whales. There are elderly people who donate many times a day. These are basically the same kinds of texts that scammers send and they catch people in almost exactly the same way.
Donations to democratic candidates by young people are down compared to prior elections while donations by the elderly are way up. Politicians are making these spam companies rich while they bleed their elderly voters dry and aggravate their future electorate. Idiocy.
