This is a wild re-imagining of what "Fair use" means in the US courts, which have a relatively straightforward four point test, and of which OpenAI, a commercial venture that produces exact copies of an article and thus acts as a market-replacement for the original work, fails handily.

What OpenAI wants is "free use".

SO suffered from its success and, bluntly, the laziness of humans.

I remember when I started the getting the distinct feeling that most of the questions being asked weren't being asked by genuine developers struggling with a concept or problem, but were basically "do my job for me" types, largely overseas developers.

I stopped contributing.

I want one and I don't know what I'd do with it

I don't understand why you'd build an operating system that has to work on top of the operating system you have to use to run the browser that runs your operating system so you can use the apps that run on your operating system that run in the browser that's running on an operating system that has versions of the app you're running in the browser that's running your operating system.

Monorepo's don't solve dependency hell. They amplify it.

There are already open-source and free alternatives for every mega app.

true. we're throwing our hat in the ring too and some people like it, some don't. regardless, more options for everybody...

Turns out product design is a lot harder than "Make me a product. Don't make any mistakes."

Yes that.

Are people not aware that every single one of these already had open source, self-hosted alternatives? Why do we need to add a pile of slop-code knockoffs? Why does it need to be one giant repo? Does this person have any experience building and releasing software that wasn't built and released for them by a robot?

not just person, AI startup! this'll be the one to save the world, i bet

Since you're attacking me personally,

> Does this person have any experience building and releasing software that wasn't built and released for them by a robot?

I built https://github.com/heyputer/puter. What have you done? Because your GitHub is pretty empty: https://github.com/etchalon, and your company's website doesn't redirect to https. Doesn't inspire much confidence when you're not even doing the basic stuff right, does it?

`puter` looks like a great project and vastly more interesting than the slop-code knock-offs you're doing with `everything`. I don't know why you pivoted from "genuinely interesting idea with real intent and thought" to slop.

As for the "what I've done" ad hominem, yeah ... I don't spend a lot of time working on open-source anything because I run a services-based agency. My "computer time" hours go to billable work, and I don't have a ton of time to spend on open-source anything. So my personal public GitHub is mostly empty and my agency one (https://github.com/thisismess?q=&type=source&language=&sort=) isn't much better.

Basically, I'm a professional who writes code for money and when not writing code for money, I do other things.

As for TLS, it's a static site with a contact form my cofounder threw together in a weekend because our previous site was like 8 years old. No one noticed or cared we'd forgot to check the box in Cloudflare to enforce TLS. But it's deeply hilarious to lean on that as some type of "rebuttal".

The site gets 10 hits a week.

Nothing I posted was "attacking you personally" beyond asking some fairly basic questions based entirely on the quality of the repo posted here.

Because it's deeply hard to look at this and think "This person has expertise and experience in software design" and not "someone told Claude to make them a product and they’d like some credit for that.”

Jesus. 25% is ... a lot.

Especially all at once..

They could have done 10% a year for the next 2-3 years, but the immediate financial gratification wouldn’t be satisfied

Copilot going to pick up the slack of 25% of the workforce?

I'd argue it's actually better to do 25 % at once and then not doing anything like it for ... decades, ideally, but years, realistically.

Spreading it out means employees spend some of their time with an ear to the ground rather than working, and teams have to deal with multiple restructurings, neither of which are good for well-being nor productivity.

But Microsoft has turned layoffs at the end/beginning of the fiscal year into an iPhone-like release schedule. It's so reliable at this point that it's a meme outside the company amongst its customers. I know for a fact each June/July I'm getting a new account team as people are shuffled around, and low performers are shown the door

Even with these buyouts, there will be layoffs next summer. And the summer after that. And the summer after that.

Yeah, but they've been running layoffs (sometimes more than even yearly) since what, 2022? 2023 at the latest.

Not to say that this is isn't huge, but it's _up_to_ 25%, given that some will accept and some won't.

And the internal memo currently circulating actually does not mention that number so I'd be curious where it came from.

Business Insider says it came from a Microsoft spokesperson. In the absence of an explicit number in a press release, I'd be inclined to believe it.

Isn't average corporate worker attrition at 11-12%? so they could achieve that much just with hiring freeze.

11-12% annually, so yeah a year long hiring freeze might get you to the right number. The problem is that it gives you no flexibility or control over who attrits, and removes your ability to keep critical roles filled.

Well, the MSFT stock is up on the news today. Not the effect the hiring freeze is known for.

Most employees don't actually take the option when presented with it. Google has offered these in the past and while I don't know the actual rate of acceptance, it was very very low based on what I saw.

It’s way too much to be believable

Monkey paw curls.
