Can you expand? What is the frontier of capability doing now?

The frontier of capability right now is writing most of the code by hand. I'm not joking.

Multiple studies have come out recently that AI use when not used as a tutor leads to loss of learning. It's a great way to ensure you end up jobless in the future when you forget even very basic syntax from no longer having to deal with hard problems. It's why pilots still fly manually by hand even though the autopilot can do practically everything.

I was curious, found this in their history: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50334030

Being charitable, perhaps they're mostly focused on efficiency, not overall capability. I can see that using swarms probably rarely results in solutions you couldn't reach with a single agent, at much higher cost. I think the tradeoff is that you get to the solution with less clock time though.

That said, the article text they quoted isn't even about swarms, it's just about the mental fatigue of juggling multiple single-agent threads. And there I agree with the article. I keep doing it because of agent speed, maybe I should just bite the bullet and get some $500 subs so I can use Astra ultrafast for everything. Only half joking...

The idea of AI writing books better than humans is alien to me, because judging good writing involves interpreting the emotions and ideas the author is trying to express through their writing. AI is not trying to express anything, and doesn't even have a mind to express.

At this point I just assume that it's impossible for me to try the new model that Google announces and invites me to try.

No one said that though, or even implied it. They said that if you have any ambition, AI is going to _prove useful_. How do you go from there to "ambition hinges upon using AI"?

It's just the logical contrapositive. "If you have ambition, you find AI useful" necessarily implies "if you do not find AI useful, you do not have ambition."

I think Amazon just adds another layer of packaging. I can imagine you are still responsible for yours.

And that's the irony for me - adds another package over package, but it probably complies with documents, I hope they are filled in paper.

I get the idea behind the law. Not once I was surprised how many waste is in packaging and badly packaged goods (not only shipped, but even available in local shop). But this regulation changes nothing, just adds layer of paperwork and broke international shipping (many non-eu stopped selling to eu - I hope it's temporary only…).

Don’t worry there’s regulation in the works that will mandate how much air you can have in the box[1]. The EU is on the case.

Good lord. At what point do we need to just wipe the slate clean and start over?

Well that was a waste of time. Tried this for my MX 3:

- The DPI slider did nothing most of the time, but sometimes the cursor movement changed when clicking a button or switching windows.

- No matter what I chose, the scroll wheel was stuck at absolute maximum sensitivity setting scrolling about a thousand lines per ratchet click. There was also no way to disable the "smart" switch to freewheel spinning.

- For some reason, tapping the thumb wheel triggered Task View. Tapping the thumb wheel isn't even listed as an interaction so no way to change or disable this.

Love the idea of an "open" version of Logi options, but this is just terribly executed. Can't state anything about the code but the bewildering behavior and weird bugs definitely smelled like vibe slop.

Found this app a few days ago and am glad to see this comment just for the task view thing. I don’t really mind the other warts of this except this one which has been driving me nuts. I am not experiencing the scroll sensitivity issue.

> Inclusion means also including people with different beliefs and respecting their opinions, even if we don't share them.

Does this apply to immigrants?

Your takeaway is right in line with their tagline:

"The airport bestsellers that captured our hearts and ruined our minds"

How do you evaluate the quality of a summary of a paper you do not have the knowledge to read and understand?

> How do you evaluate the quality of a summary of a paper you do not have the knowledge to read and understand?

Tough question. I think the straightforward answer is that you can't.

That said, there is some confidence gained in an LLM's abilities based on its performance on papers in domains that I do understand. Yes, it's not going to be the same across all domains, but the frontier labs do publish capability scores across different domains, and that helps scrutinize the answers it provides, and how much salt to take with those.

Would you prefer that they do it without dignity?

I would prefer they don't do it at all, unless there's a medical urgency.

Ah yes, a reply in true hacker fashion, if people only were that binary. Just don't use, then addiction wouldn't be a thing! Problem solved. We can see it all around, the now 55 years war on drugs has been a great success!

I'm not sure if you ever had to deal with someone addicted close to you, but it is heartbreaking. They are already ashamed of themselves and suffer. The last thing you want to do is take away their dignity, because that shuts them out and puts the path to recovery even further. They are still humans you know, just with a problem. They need help, not a trashing. That they are already doing to themselves.

That’s what I said, though? If they’re addicted and working on their addiction – there’s a medical reason why they do it. If they’re shooting heroin for fun, then they’ll get nothing but scorn from me.
