Same here. I work at Meta (outside Reality Labs) and don't believe the company will see any commercial success with AR/VR long term.

But I'm bullish about VR having amazing potential and I'm glad to see its evolution get accelerated by all these investments.

Can confirm. I'm really bullish about VR's potential but almost never use it.

Yeah I don't think anyone would disagree that with time, know-how, manual labor, and a 50% performance degradation, you might save money.

"The best minds of my generation are thinking about how to make people click ads"

- Jeff Hammerbacher

This is reductionist. Why does anyone want you to click ads? Because they want you to see what they shared with the world. The best minds are trying to get people to pay attention to those who wish to pay for that.

A video game programmer might sat.. "all of the best minds are working on silly games" Why are so many bright minds wasting trying to get us into space when we have problems that need to be solved here.

The best minds solving problems is only part of any solution anyways. You need the best salesmen, best leader and right moment to bring in change that mat make lives better.

"The paperclip optimizer is simply trying to make another paperclip, what's the harm in that?"

> Why does anyone want you to click ads? Because they want you to see what they shared with the world. The best minds are trying to get people to pay attention to those who wish to pay for that.

Framing advertising as "people trying to share beautiful things with you" is some hell of a newspeak.

Maybe they are not the best minds after all.

> I listen to podcasts at 2.7x

Jesus lord. And here I go at 1.25x and sometimes 1.5x and think that's fast as fuck.

If you're a native speaker listening to native speakers, you can probably easily do 2x after a few hours of getting used to it.

If you're listening to someone with an accent you might have to slow it down a lot.

Likewise if your audio quality isn't very good or if you're concentrating too much on another task.

E.g. when I'm walking in familiar neighborhoods 2.7x is easy but when the area is even somewhat unfamiliar I either slow it down to 1.x or turn it off, because I suddenly find it hard to grok the content.

I first started speeding up my podcasts when I heard that blind people can listen above 4x ~ 6x speed without missing a beat.

I'm still trying to break the 3x barrier.

This is an optimization I am happy to live without. I usually digest podcasts in pieces, and very rarely, outside of driving, listen to one from start to finish. I consume audio books the same way.

> There are companies like WhatsApp was before acquisition that only needed couple dozen people.

But what was its revenue? Was it profitable?

And I think B is especially key for large global products. Most users of common apps like Facebook don't see the advertiser side, for instance, or don't know that some features are built for specific countries due to regulatory or compliance reasons.

I've done a lot of hiring. Happy to give thoughts on your resume if you want (for free).

You may need to post contact info in your profile. Your email doesn't display by default.

I would love to hear your thoughts on mine, if you're open

> Meta expects you to have managed at least 40 ppl before considering them for a M2 role

Not true. At least not as of late. M2 promos can lean on different things, e.g. delivered impact, over established people scope. But the person trying to promote you need to be able to do that well. Source: Have done M2 promotions at Meta.

I'm not talking about promotions particularly.
