I recently blocked youtube.com on my home network so that my whole family could take a break from it. It broke my work e-mail login, because gmail sends you through youtube.com in order to set login cookies.

I am not who you asked, but lately it has been really frustrating for me that macOS locks portions of the filesystem when the screen is locked, which breaks rsync backups because they cannot read those files. I have been unable to find a way around this.

That being said, the security design that creates this problem is quite impressive, and I think much more tight than most people realize is happening on stock macOS. I just wish that I could unlock my whole home directory from the CLI somehow when I do my non-time-machine backup.

The first time I held an iPhone 5, I thought it was a demo device. It was too light to actually be the real device. That was such a great phone.

Have you ever connected an iPad to an external display, mouse, and keyboard? I agree with you that laptop sales would continue, but I bet they would decline. Apple could do the MS Surface much better than MS did.

I’m not so sure personally. A MacBook Air is not that much less portable than an iPad, but is far more useful for work when not docked than an iPad because it still has a keyboard and a precision pointing device. And it can still be docked when you need a bigger screen.

The areas where the iPad beats the MacBook are still (imo) the same as the day it launched: web browsing, watching video, and reading. Workloads that are heavy on the Apple Pencil too, but that’s a fairly narrow slice compared to anything else you might do on a computer.

I mean my iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard case has fully replaced my Mac for everything. I haven’t touched my Mac in months. I literally do all of my work via GitHub Codespaces (soon to be self-hosted Coder). Yes it’s not all on device but it works (for me).

I don’t see anything in my use case that I’d gain from a MacBook over this setup.

Yeah I used a Magic Keyboard myself for a while but I found it significantly impacted what I liked about the iPad. It doubled the weight, and removed the ability to hold it in my hand or in portrait (still the most common orientation I use mine). Sure you can take it out any time, but I found it just added a lot of extra friction to a device that previously had very little (iPadOS aside). Glad it’s working well for you though.

Lots of computers have external keyboards, mice, and displays. Why not a powerful computer like the iPhone? Who cares if it's small? Lots of SBCs are small and are quite useful. This one even has a built in UPS.

You can literally use all those things with an iPhone. Including all at the same time.

In the current season of LLM driven security research, this is even more important. There are a LOT of EOL devices sitting there unpatched, vulnerable to the growing number of vulnerabilities. We can either stick our heads in the sand, we can demand the ability to update the vulnerable software on the hardware we bought, or we can exploit the CVE ourselves (collectively, as a community) and introduce CFW for the vulnerable devices.

The main thing I'm taking away from this LG thing is that I'm going to root my TV as quickly as I can with whatever CFW will get rid of this surveillance capitalism atrocity attached to the wall in my family room.
