Thanks, this is good to know.

The other large component which gets thrown around is engagement. It seems as if only companies like flurry would be able to discern this sort of information. Anything on a large scale with an embedded sdk that reports engagement really.

Does anyone know of an up-to-date analysis of the iOS app store ranking algorithm? I've seen first hand how ratings can move an app up the list, but I've never noticed engagement or sales having an impact.

Apple keeps it very close to the chest, a lot like Google does with their algorithms. If people know what makes rankings rise and fall, they'll inevitably find a way to game the system. The only things I've seen that definitively affect rankings is downloads and ratings. Sales affect the top grossing rankings only.

I'm sure he's aware of that. This is a major element of the UI which shouldn't require you to move to another screen to enjoy.

Swiping near the bottom with my thumb hasn't bothered me so far, but the text is quite hard to read at that small of a size. I would also like to those cards a bit larger in the future.

Agreed about the text size. Things look great, feel good and it's easy to follow what's going on after a short amount of time but it can be hard to read.

I love how deep objc.io dives. They'll present long essays on topics which normally get glossed over in a sentence or two. Particularly useful are their thoughts on the state of objective c design patterns (quite a volatile topic since the release of iOS).

I absolutely loved the views and controls articles, something so basic but so usefully in-depth. I acquired many of the facts they mention through trial, error, and WWDC sessions over the years... my coworkers would think I was talking out my ass when I'd bring up the kind of internal plumbing it mentions (e.g., subviews over drawRect or image views being ridiculously fast) and it's nice to have as a resource.

This just means apps will have to be built with Xcode 5. Older iOS versions can still be supported.

More specifically, it means apps will have to be built with the iOS 7 base SDK (you can modify Xcode 5 to build with the older SDKs as base).

This ensures things like the new style keyboard and status bar UI are used in your app when running on iOS 7.

In 2000...

2013 Argentinian here. To buy a house right now you usually have to pay dollars cash because nobody accepts a currency that devaluates 25% per year.

The political class here is crazy corrupt and rich like in every third world country, and they are known for using piles of 500 euros bills to stay out of the bank system because euros have more wealth density than dollars.

I'm a little offended by the "like in every third world country" statement. Chile is not like that at all, and we are a third world country.

In fact, here we are ranked right under (20th) the US (19th) in terms of transparency:

http://www.transparency.org/country#CHL http://www.transparency.org/country#USA_DataResearch

Argentina is ranked 102: http://www.transparency.org/country#ARG_DataResearch

In all of Latin America, the closest countries to Chile in that transparency ranking are Costa Rica, with the 48th place, then Cuba 58th and then Brazil 69th.

Edit: added justification data with links / I'm proud of Chile

Chile will probably stop being third-world soon enough, though (I heard something about startup accelerators popping up there?)

There should be a term for "third-world country that's probably going to stay third-world for the forseeable future, excepting a revolutionary change of government." Maybe... dystopia? Argentina is a dystopia.

Checkout http://startupchile.org they've made a lot of noise. There are quite a few cool (and successful) companies that have come out of there. My two favorites: Padlet (padlet.com) and Admetricks (admetricks.com). Padlet was also in YC and Imagine K-12 (after StartupChile)

USA and allies: 1st-world; Soviets and allies: 2nd-world; all others: 3rd-world.

>Chile will probably stop being third-world soon enough

Sorry, I don't think so. Chile is doing good nowadays but basically their only export is copper. Copper is a semi-precious metal right now and thats why that country suddenly has so much wealth, but the difference between rich and poor is abysmal and their economy is tied to the price a single non-renewable resource.

Compared to Chile, Argentina still has a huge tech industry capable of exporting value-added products like cars.

Chile is in the top-10 freest countries in the world right now, alongside Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore and other economic successes. Taxes are low, and there are huge incentives for people to start their own businesses. You can register a new business in 3 days, and registering trademarks is one of simplest processes in the world. This is in very sharp contrast to Argentina.

Yes, copper is selling very well, and it takes up a large proportion of the country's exports, but you are mistaken to think that this is the driving cause of the country's increase in wealth over the last 20 years.

The increase in wealth comes from the fact that incentives now exist for people to create wealth. Where wealth is created, there is more wealth. It's the same principle we have seen working throughout history.

"Third-world" is a loaded term and doesn't really have a useful definition anymore.

You are right, just like developed country. Your comment reminded me of this very interesting video that compares the US, Cuba and Chile: http://www.gapminder.org/videos/gapmindervideos/gapcast-6-ch...

not exactly.. there was a proper term.. fourth world as well.

for 15-20 years, third world in military terms at least, meant the signatory of NAM movement. fourth world was anyone left after that.

The other big issue is how hard it is to exchange pesos for dollars. The government is doing all they can to make it nearly impossible for the average Argentinian to avoid the massive devaluation.

Yes, in 2000, because that was during the period Argentina's currency was collapsed. Any other country's currency could collapse at any time, putting some other group in the same situation.

Rushed and misread your comment, apologizes.

This hacky code most certainly isn't required.

It appears to only work on certain pre-defined coloring pages.

Naturally. Those 2D print pages must have 3D models in the app (right?). I'm wondering how the app does feature detection from the camera feed.

Our 3D modeller Shun spends about a week per page carefully designing and animating the models. You are correct, they are per page and completely pre-defined. The fun part is colouring in the pages and seeing the results :D

Even me, 28 year old male, can have a lot of fun with this app.

Why don't you guys allow for printing from within the iOS app?

Personally I'd like to do that but we have a lot of limitations with the Unity platform and supporting multiple platforms. Every feature needs to be implemented at least 2 times (iOS, Android) and tested.

Perhaps in the future once we get some money coming into the company. Right now we don't have any more funds left for development.

I'm sure this has already been discussed, and I know this falls under "easier said than done", but you guys should really try to get this on toy aisle shelves. Perhaps in the form of a book? Maybe have a prominent "Try me!" feature on the cover instructing the user to install the free app and point it at the cover to get people pulled in.

Yeah, other companies are working on this too. I think we are in a unique position at this time with what we've developed.

This is a great idea. I could see this becoming a very popular coloring book series. I'd buy it for my kids.

We've been trying to get major publishers interested for over 8 months. Molasses comes to mind.

With the right marketing and execution and a little luck you'll have tons of traction and be in a better position when they come to you to license your tech for their books!

Why would any kid ever want a "plain old" coloring book without the 3D augmented reality?

Very cool—my kids are going to love for sure!

I bet he's excited to see what he can do with CoreText and iOS7 for this.

..or LiveView or Skala. Either of which are great for live streaming content from you computer's screen to your iphone/ipad.
