This doesn't make sense: "With summertime temperatures typically -10°C to -20°C". Maybe the negative was mistakenly added, and nobody noticed in editing? 10°C to 20°C would be reasonable for a "forested and grassland plateau".

There was an ice sheet starting just north of this area, it would have melted at 10°C.

If it didn't melt in summer, its start would have been further to the south.

There's still an ice sheet an hour from my home, and it's 5-35 degrees all summer....

It is, but the number is still strongly disagreeing with any other value I can find reference to so GP does seem to be on to something being off with this reporting.

My best bet is perhaps "summer" and "winter" got swapped? That's a simple single word mistake and -10 C would seem to be about the winter average in Ireland during the last ice age from other sources I can find, regular dips to -20 C at night or particularly cold days would seem quite reasonable. Based on any other sources I can find, thea peak of summer should have been slightly warmer than freezing (which is not incompatible with year round glacial coverage, it takes a lot of energy to melt such enormous volumes of ice).

I've sent Dr Nash a short email asking if that section of the article was accurate in hopes he's willing to clarify one way or the other.

It isn't absolutely necessary to match the display refresh rate. With a 144Hz monitor, 72FPS is going to look smooth for the vast majority of the people, and even 48FPS will look smooth for most people. I agree that higher FPS is better, but there are diminishing returns.


It's a good nitpick. A hypothetical 1000Hz display will still look smooth to the human eye at 60/120Hz. A 1Hz display will never look smooth.

But it's more about honoring the user's preference. I personally would rather 60Hz, then 120Hz heating up my room unnecessarily. If someone has a display set to 1000Hz for whatever reason, then you should try your best to honor that.


A user's hardware represents the worst case scenario they want to be able to handle, not their preferred nominal settings. Most people aren't changing their screen refresh rate when they switch between playing a game and reading wikipedia.

It depends. My display being at 1000hz doesn't mean I need your homebrewed accordion menu eating up the CPU to slide out and wiggle at 1000hz

Below a certain threshold things are certainly going to look janky. But you’re right you don’t have to match the screens native refresh rate. More important is that you have a consistent frame rate. If you can’t hit 120hz, it’s better to target 60hz, rather than 120 a miss your frame budget. 30fps will also look better than 60 but regularly dropping frames.

I generally agree, though "consistent" can by varying levels of strict depending on the tradeoff you want.

But importantly, if your screen is variable refresh rate or high rate enough compared to your typical performance, that greatly reduces the inconsistency. Go ahead and vary between 55 and 70 if the screen is at 165. Definitely don't drop to 30 and I don't think you want to drop to 41.25 either.


My theory was that memory had some form of static store, something molecular like methylation. I hadn't considered something dynamic/temporal like you describe.

Would delay line memory be a fair analogy? Information stored in a delay line memory never stays in one place. I think you are saying biological information is "stored" in the amplitude and phase of oscillations of our cells. Is that correct?

I'm still inclined to believe there is some form of static store, which would be required for inherited memories. Things like our (and many other mammals) ability to recognize emotions in others. Somehow our gametes encode what a happy, sad, or scared face looks like. I instincts as inherited memories.


I'm an aspie, and think my "version" of ASD has a large epigenetic component. I think social emotions that develop through childhood and adolescence happen through epigenetic changes that enable and disable sets of genetic material (not necessarily just genes) as the person develops. I think the physical changes that happen with puberty must involve timed epigenetic changes. I think the same thing happens with emotional development.

I don't feel shame. I don't feel deference to authority. I never developed innate lust (sexual desire); it was learned after my girlfriend initiated sex. I never had problems with peer pressure. I like getting along with other people, but I don't NEED to get along with other people.

My "problems" with empathy are primarily related to social emotions I don't feel. All my basic/mammalian emotions are fine. I cringe when I see someone stub their toe or cut their finger. I can't even watch bloody dramas on TV, because I feel uncomfortable despite knowing that it is fake.

I think epigenetic differences likely play a larger role than genetic (DNA) differences because the mutation rate of the epigenome is higher than the mutation rate of the genome. Of course, I agree that the biology of ASD (and biology in general) is very complex, so I'm sure there's a lot more going on than just epigenetic differences.

When I say "epigenetic", I'm not just referring to histone/methylation/cromatin changes to DNA, and perhaps there's a better word for what I'm trying to describe. It's my suspicion that some of the differences in my variant of ASD are not due to DNA variations, but other differences outside DNA such as RNA, prions, germ cell transposon differences, etc.

I can remember liking girls from the time I was 5. As with neurotypical pre-pubescent boys I had no sexual interest; holding hands was the only physical contact I desired. How can I attract more of these bots to my server? I want to test my Apache bad bot blocker. It uses basic header fingerprinting and h2 support to filter them. I get less than 5000 hits on an average day, and want a lot more.


I went from 2k hits a day to 15k in the past week.

Point a domain at your IP, use letsencrypt, post your domain on Reddit, github, x, etc. The bots will find you.


I have a domain with an SSL cert. https://solarsi.ca/ I tried posting on /r/sysadmin asking for help testing a bot blocker, but a moderator quickly deleted the post, claiming it was marketing/promoting.

My wife and I have a few rental properties that I manage. They are investments, chosen based on return on investment and equity (ROI/ROE). Maintenance costs were factored into those calculations. We take care of repairs not because our job is "providing the service of housing", but because we are honest and would not sign a lease (or any contract) in bad faith. When the lease says the property includes appliances, then we ensure broken appliances are fixed or replaced promptly. If/when we can't make a reasonable ROE on a rental property, we don't cut corners to squeeze a bit more profit out of it, we sell it and invest the money elsewhere.


Sounds like two different ways of saying the same thing. Each is planning on certain expected return which will have allocated costs for maintenance accounted for as part of the agreement to provide the housing service (which is what the contract will describe in detail).

I highly doubt there is no other technically feasible option to block the AI bots. You end up blocking not just bots, but many humans too. When I clicked on the link and the bot block came up, I just clicked back. I think HN posts should have warnings when the site blocks you from seeing it until you somehow, maybe, prove you are human.


I'm sure there are many solutions for many problems, but expecting a small Foss development team to know or implement them all is rather unreasonable.

I think the world gains more if the VLAN team focuses on their amazing, free contribution to the world, than if they spend the same time trying to figure out how to save you two clicks.

We all hate that this is happening, but you don't need to attack everyone that is unfortunately caught up in it.

If you have discovered such an option, you could get very wealthy: minimizing friction for humans in e-commerce is valuable. If you're a drive-by critic not vested in the project, then yours is an instance of talk being cheap.

First off, don't block the first connection of the day from a given IP. Rate limit/block from there, for example how sshguard does it.

I've seen several posts on HN and elsewhere showing many bots can be fingerprinted and blocked based on HTTP headers and TLS.

For the bots that perfectly match the fingerprint of an interactive browser and don't trigger rate limits, use hidden links to tarpits and zip bombs. Many of these have been discussed on HN. Here's the first one that came to memory: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42725147

The bots come from a huge number of IP addresses, that won't really help that much. And it doesn't solve the UX problem either, because most pages require multiple requests for additional assets, and requiring human verification then is a lot more complicated than for the initial request.

That requires properly fingerprinting the browser, which will almost certainly have false positives from users who use unusual browsers or use anti-fingerprinting.

That can waste the bot users resources, but doesn't necessarily protect your site from bots. And Also requires quite a bit of work that small projects don't have time for.

Unless there is a prebuilt solution that is at least as easy to deploy and at least as effective as something like anubis, it isn't really practical for most sites.
