For those who are bored with the "new opportunity" emails from Google and maybe other companies: rather than trolling recruiters with obnoxious responses, you can just ask them to add you to the non-contact/ignore list and most probably they'll not bother you ever again.

>> > 20-year-old white guys with no responsibilities and/or with enough income to "buy" more free time

> Good old racism and man hate is doing just fine.

This is a strange generalization indeed. Esp. considering that the post author maintains an active technical blog and speaks at events (I assume these activities take about the same amount of resources as hobby open source development).

PS I don't know a lot of open source developers in person, and just identify them by name, communication and the code. However, the ones I happened to talk with on broader topics, usually happen to be older than 20. Also, I'm not sure how, and, most importantly, why I would question about their responsibilities though...

> Everyone knows this is bad for improvement and health, but company owners keep pushing everyone with salary and punishment, along with moral pressure, that only fighting this way, the company can survive in the big race in almost every industry area.

Do they do any research to prove 996 is really effective? I have a hard time imagining how one could stay productive for long in such working mode.

Sometimes I have some hard deadlines (like a lot of other developers I guess) that requires to work 10-12 hours/day to get things done in time, but that usually lasts for a week, maybe two. And it's _already_ very exhausting. I'm wondering how exhausting it could be to work in such mode all the time...

Because most of the Chinese company work in this pattern, I don't think a very pervasive research can be done and there is none I know that exists.

I think it works when you are copying things with lots of entry level developers at low cost, like most companies do. You know, they will find something that's working great in America and Europe and copy the whole thing very fast and launch new ones. This is how you guys have Google, we have Baidu; you have Uber, we have Didi; you have Periscope, we have over 100 mobile video live apps, etc.. But if you are inventing things, this won't work at all. I think this is one of the major reason why we lack of innovative products all these years.

This is a very common practice throughout the industry since about 2-3 years ago, and it's a very sad story every time I tell it.

yeah, esp. when he says "too little done"...

Mutt is a very nice MUA that I use daily. The only thing that is bugging me is its slowness when working with large mailboxes.

Opening an IMAP mailbox with 100.000+ messages takes 60-90 seconds. And caching does not make things much faster. :(

Beware, once you learn some of the git useful patterns and features, most likely you'll start feeling very uncomfortable when you have to go back to svn ;)

probably because the pool of candidates for positions that imply better wage is much smaller and it's harder to find and recruit a candidate, so such small things like free beer and snacks become more important?

ps also, most likely wage of those making the least in the company has no correlation to goods such as free food etc.

Agreed. I follow this topic for quite some time already, but I cannot understand few fundamental things.

I understand that indeed people could have "issues" because of their gender, race or some other quality. I support they in their effort to make things better.

However, I do not understand this categorization. By categorizing people this way one actually splits a group of people into smaller groups based on given categorization. Those groups have conflicting interests and different level of privileges, and each of the groups tries to change that.

But why, instead of working within this artificial categorized groups, just get away from this categorization completely?

PS It's a sensitive topic and I hope I didn't offend anyone; sorry if I somehow did it, however. PPS I'm wondering what are the job duties of diversity consultants...

I believe that while LinkedIn is useful and having it won't hurt in any ways, having resume is also necessary.

I cannot say a receive lots of work requests, but the usual pattern for me is that HR people find me on LinkedIn somehow, contact directly and ask for a resume.

I've been in the same situation. What I dislike about this is that my resume doesn't have much more information than what I've chosen to feature in my LinkedIn profile. I suspect that this is all about formalities, and that their recruiting and/or HR policies require a resume.

What's terrible with 72 char wrapping? 72 char wrapped text looks almost like an average printed book or pdf for example and reads perfectly well.

And people who have really large screens could use vertical splits or maybe tilling window managers to utilise their screen space more effectively.
