There are occasions when submissions are entirely removed and don't even retain the title or URL. I know this because I use hckrnews.com as my HN front page

Yes, I do too. But can you give an example of something that was removed which wasn't garbage?

Data scientist means someone who's had classes in stats and knows how to use software to analyze data. They don't cover how to run experiment and don't cover ethics

To be fair, the profile of a data scientist at a F500 non tech company and at a company like FB is slightly different. Facebook's data science crew is known for being heavier on the stats lighter on the software (relatively speaking) and probably can design a good experiment.

That said, anyone who signs up for a job at Facebook doesn't give a shit about ethical design of experiments.

Hi, I used to work on ML and ran experiments like this one at FB. Just want to point out that the effect of experiments like this on an individual is smaller than the effect of making the app start 0.1 seconds faster, or retraining the network used to filter hate speech. The only reason the effect is significant is because N>650k, so tiny effect sizes can be detected.

whats the variance on that effect?? doesn't a large data set like that just lead to type ii errors?

Yes, there is a way. You left them specifically opt in to it, you provide them disclosure documents of what's being tested, and you provide free access to mental health resources.

It would be interesting to find out if these experiments lead to any suicides etc. Although I suppose that Facebook is not interested in releasing that type of information.

Which drop of rain caused the dam to break? In the book Good Omens there is a demon who considered himself the best not because he was the best deceiver or torturer, but because of his ability to cause mass malcontent.

The real evil isn’t in the experiment, it’s that the researchers found that Facebook makes people’s lives worse. How many suicides are caused by Facebook’s investors? Whether they can mitigate it this way or that is splitting hairs.

I disagree. If facebook is testing content like this then they explicitly know which content makes people sad. To manipulate someone's feed to push them stuff that knowingly makes them sad for the purpose of experimenting with someone's emotions, that is highly unethical to me.

There is a massive difference in studying and directing traffic to help make traffic flow better. The goal there is to improve driving for everyone. Facebook's goal is to intentionally make people unhappy for the sole purpose of making more money.

Biggest source of theft in the US is wage theft by employers.

Wait.. really? I'd love to dive into some of those numbers. I'm not saying you are wrong - otoh, I want to see if I can screen for behaviors that are preparatory.

It also disables the ability to view weather on my phone at a glance or button press. I have to Google "city name weather"

U-haul charged me three times for the same thing. I spent several hours on the phone with u-haul trying to get them to reverse it. Ultimately they said the agreed I was triple charged but they couldn't reverse it and I had to contact my bank

It took EIGHT MONTHS and SEVEN phone calls with my bank to get them to charge back. And haul fought me every step of the process when they're the ones that told me to go to my bank. U-haul went as far as to straight up lie to my bank. I'm surprised they didn't forge documents with all the shit they were trying

unlikely

Chapo.chat is a popular one for leftists that formed after the chapo subreddits were censored/banned a couple months ago. Fair warning: most HN users aren't going to like it because they advocate for things like food and shelter and healthcare for everyone, no matter what

Most HN users aren't going to like it because it is for far-left "tankies" that promote violence. One of the top posts right now is:

>Some people deserve their heads to be displayed on spikes

To be fair, that posting is largely tongue in cheek because they're bitter for getting banned on reddit under the false pretense of violence. I'm sure a couple people believe it unironically but no one is actually organizing to hurt anyone.

>false pretense of violence

It was pretty real

I don't think anyone associated with y combinator or for that matter, enjoy posting on here would be welcome there.

I would even wager a large chunk would happily wish death on people here for "perpetuating a broken system" or some odd thing.

As a leftist myself I'd be inclined more to this one, although I wouldn't condone any violence that is not for self defense, nor attacking anyone just because of their ideals - unless their ideals consist in endorsing the opposite of the above. My take on food and shelter and (basic) healthcare for all is that I agree until this can pose a (real, proven) problem for others. Judging from current military expenses and top manager leaves, I'd dare to say that there's enough wealth out there to guarantee most of that to the entire planet.

He was in fact, by the language of his contract, a cofounder. He had the legal right to call himself as such even if spez and co are assholes and pretended he wasn't
