I wonder if it's the definition of "senior" that shifting. From someone well versed and experienced in software development to deep domain experts who happen to have development skills.

10-15 years ago, the advice for anyone was to apply for the job even if you don't fit 100% of the requirements. "It's a wishlist not a requirement list".

At some point in the past, few years this seemed to gave changed. Now you have to be an expert

Some years ago I applied to a government that I thought sounded interesting. It seemed to be a pretty damn good match for my skill and resume. It basically entailed developing a CRUD app to store and analyze fishery statistics. Everything about the job made it sound like it was mostly rub of the mill .NET work. Surely a good fit for me who has done that stuff for a variety of different government and private organization. I got rejected for not having enough domain experience

I'm not sure where they planned to find such a cross-domain expert who was willing to move to such remote, yet high CoL area for the already comparatively dismally salary, but hey, it didnt matter, the agency got gutted a year or two later.

In a similar way I'm reminded of when I first looked into "scientific programmer" jobs. HN swore up and down that they were desperate for developers, and that this was mostly a product of lower pay. The reality seemed a bit different. Nearly every job I saw in that area wanted a PhD scientist who could program, not the other way around.

> There is no one true people who can claim to own any land because of their race.

Its working out pretty well for the Israelis

Israelis are not claiming that. Israel is composed of many races. It is actually the Arabs who are arguing that they have solo rights to the land due to their ethnicity.

> Though oddly, I’ve never seen an anti-fibre influencer

Ah-ha! At last, a niche I can squirm myself into in our brave new world.

I'll grant you the food dessert and going back arguments, but unless I'm buying particularly out of season or less common, foreign vegetables, produce is often one of the cheapest sections of the store.

Get yourself a time machine and go back 10 or so years when the market was hot enough for this it be feasible.

> You either supply nobody and then you get to play your neutrality card or you pick a side. If you supply both sides you're just a cynical war profiteer without a conscience.

Yes, and that helped turn the US into the global hegemony it is today. No wonder China wants a wack. Power doesn't need a conscience.

> I can’t really think of anyone that has fit that bill over the last 75 years in Africa, the closest might be Paul Kagame in Rwanda.

Seemed to be at least a few in the immediate era of independence for certain African states. Unfortunately for them the cold war was raging and I think most of them were brutally murdered and replaced "strong men" who crippled their country with rampant corruption and cowardly paranoia.

I saw a video the other day advertising AI-powered a anti-air/drone gun. Seems to be part of a defense trade show, but also seemed to indicate that it was available to certain "qualified" citizens, but I'm not sure what that means exactly

Just popping, maybe snorting. A bunch of amphetamine addicts.

Yeah but those new grads are too uppity. We tried throwing money at them, but they're more interested in productivity destroying quality of life improvements.

The imported worker, on the other hand, is a more efficient and compliant machine. Maybe if we make those youths as poor as the workers we import, they'll eventually learn some gratitude.
