The apparent liberalness of Scotland is largely just rhetorical opposition to the rest of the UK's policies. On actual policy issues (e.g. appropriate level of welfare) Scotland polls much like the rest of the UK. Of course they to some extent would prefer European masters to English ones. However they also spent a long time convincing themselves of the feasability of a much deeper divorce, so they probably did not buy into the economic doom stories.

Apparently the low oil price has banished the prospect of Scottish independence for now at least.
