It seems like PaaSes are the new JavaScript frameworks[0]. Kubernetes now has most of the "critical pieces" mentioned and Helm addresses the "rigid" config criticism. It's not newbie proof yet but I doubt your 1.5 man-year project would get anywhere close to K8s is in terms of maturity and stability.
