I went to a school that was very supportive and often send multiple people to those and similar competitions. (I was quite active in the mathematics olympiades, and helped out with organizing them after I finished school.)

That approach is probably not suitable for you. Like lini said, having a mentor or coach or just a mate is a good idea. You can ask on HN or on irc, I guess you will find people to help you.
