Given the amount of investment WD has made into the ecosystem its questionable how much money they have made yet. In the long run they will make a fair amount of money, but the cost of developing all these chips, supporting the open source ecosystem and tooling and so on is not free.

Apparently they were able to take over the SPARC people that were dropped by Oracle.
