Most of the comments ignore that this is likely to be well received by many consumers, because it sounds good on the surface: Apple is using tech magic to fight bad guys. Hooray!

Worse, it’s nearly impossible for a competitor to market against without risking the general population believing you tacitly approve CSAM. How does Google market Android without coming across like a safe haven for pedophilia?

In an era with so many people screaming, "Defund the police!" I can't see how reporting more stuff to the police automatically is going to go over well PR-wise.

Even before that phrase, we were already in era of "Don't talk to the cops without your lawyer, especially if you're innocent." Giving those same cops more information is not in your own best interest.

This is a very vocal, very small minority. The most ardent police reformers I know believe that law enforcement is necessary. Defunding has devastating consequences on those who are most vulnerable.

"Defund the Police" is a terrible slogan but your take on it is inaccurate.

It's not about removing law enforcement, it's about repatriating the excessive funds that have gone towards aggressive militarization of the police....and putting it towards other social care workers who are trained and better suited to serving the most vulnerable.

It's not about abolishment, it's about reform and restructuring to better support society
