They got huge heat for this—and rightly so. Ginger Labs has since granted full grandfathering. From their blog:
Everyone who purchased Notability prior to our switch to subscription on November 1st, 2021 will have lifetime access to all existing features and any content previously purchased in the app.
Really quite the jerk move in the first place, since I don’t think Ginger Labs incurs any cost from hosting (all managed through iCloud) or the ML features (on-device).
They just lost like all their good will however. Someone’s getting fired for this.
