Not sure why this is posted, but as an amateur aircraft builder, I have a love hate relationship with these things. On one hand, they're clearly very versatile and cheap. On the other, if there's a significant curve in where they're installed, it can be incredibly frustrating to get the pins in/out.
In some cases, we'll take the kit-provided hinge and put them aside. Instead, we'll use SkyBolt camloc-style fastners.
Unlike the author, I _have_ had one of these vibrate its way out in flight. It was a small door that had a fastener on the other end, so it didn't completely detach from the airplane, but it was noisy and somewhat frightening at first.
The cowling on my Lancair 360 uses these and I absolutely love them, I’d like them on my next aerobatic plane, but not sure we’ll be able to make that happen.
My T-18 used them as well, in the ailerons and on the horizontal tail.
Edit: the aluminum variety. That link takes me back to years of EAA membership, and flying my T-18 to the annual Rockford flyin (before they moved to Oskosh)
