Ask HN: How do you keep mobile contacts updated?
11 points by cloudking on March 23, 2023 | hide | past | favorite | 7 comments
Does anyone have a good solution for keeping mobile contacts up to date? I want a solution that will automatically update contact info, pictures etc. Ideally it could sync with LinkedIn and other social networks.

CardDav/CalDAV to any service that fits your privacy model.

This can be a service hosted by you.

Haven’t used this myself but being seeing Marissa Mayer’s sunshine on Twitter a lot more recently - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sunshine-smart-contacts/id1581...

Weird haven’t thought about this much but don’t believe to have lost any contacts ever, have people on my phone from at least fifteen years ago. Am bringing this up because am curious how people lose contacts, don’t they live on the SIM card? Only way that comes to mind is losing a phone or similar

Same here - I sync the contacts with google, since it is an android phone. I maintain a "steve-mobile-gmail" account solely for use with my phone, which is distinct from the paid account I actually use for email etc.

Sadly I even have a "Deceased" label, which I add to contacts I know have died, which shows that I keep contacts essentially "forever".

I really don’t keep stuff up to date anymore because my cell phone has never been as unreliable and prone to dropping calls as it is in 2023.

my iPhone does this just fine - and has for at least a decade

every once in a great while...it appends a bunch of duplicate entries for someone (observationally, it's only when they've made a change on one of the social networks I used to sync via)

but merging contacts is pretty simple
