This issue is why I'm a believer in the web as a platform. It's not the right tool for every job (yet), and I still use a great many native applications myself. But the moral hazard is simply too high for us to be comfortable with vendor lock-in being the norm in computing.

For all their warts, Javascript and the web are the first truly universal computing platform, and their capabilities only continue to grow, slowly but surely. And without hating on the (highly profitable) walled gardens, the open jungle is where I prefer my energies to go.
