It was possible to read on computer screens at the time.



You wouldn't be using Computer Modern for reading on a Commodore 64 or Amiga 1000 of the era. The resolution of the displays was just too low, on OSes designed for bitmap fonts with no antialiasing or subpixel rendering. Here's the sort of font you'd be looking at, and their primitiveness is not because their designers liked the retro aesthetic:
