I have been working on and off on https://www.whichtemple.in

- it is a collection of ~ 2700 temples across India, with images sourced from wikipedia

- it shows you a random temple each time you visit

- it has a map view of temples across India

So this is just the tip of the iceberg. I am trying to build a catalogue of all temples, starting with India, and expanding on to the rest of the world. The focus is on temples originating from Indic religions like Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism.

I have personally discovered many cool temples that I have never heard of, but I am struggling on how to gamify this. Feedback welcome!

You should make a pokedex out of this!

Imagine scanning the temple with your smartphone (taking a picture with gps data) to see details about the temples. Would be so cool.

Then make them into categories like Water Temple, and like a stat quartett with details. Would be an awesome travel companion.

oh like Pokemon go but for temples? that is a pretty cool idea!

Would love to filter this by states so that I can go to the interesting temples in my state first before trying out other places. Would make it more functional.

Yes, definitely on my list. For now you can try the map view and zoom into your state. Thanks for the feedback!

Nice one. Maps feature still needs too many clicks. Will be great to type in a place and get all the nearby ones. A snippet of whats interesting about this temple would also be interesting with the pic along with the existing wikipedia option.

Thank you, that is a good suggestion

Checkout OpenStreetMap. You can add a map snippet using leaflet. It's trivial. Just that it won't be Google maps which people might be looking for.

yes I already have that at https://www.whichtemple.in/map

Perfect. Will keep this website bookmarked. Thanks.

A fun game would be to quickly guess the religion of a temple? Could familiarize people with the common iconography of the various dharmic religions.

Yeah tbh I don't know if it is easy to do that. Any suggestions?
