Its insanely safe in the tier 1 cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen etc). You can forget your bag in the train and you will get it back, with contents (i have had this). You can also just leave your motor/moped running all night, keys in ignition and it will still be there the next morning (i have seen this). You can walk on the streets at night, without a worry. Still common sense applies.
