Orders for media get debated endlessly, but release order is always the safest bet. If you were there on day 1 and played each thing when it was new, that was release order, and that's what a lot of people did. Even intentional prequels may tease later stuff for fans who know the other entries. In other words I think things are made with release order in mind more than chronological order.
