Democracy has been trammeled before. This does not excuse it being trammeled again.
The scandals you list at the end of your comment had, largely if not entirely, investigations and consequences. The NSA scandals largely have not. I would say Jimmy Carter has admirably high standards for our country, except that's not it. The rest of us, generally speaking, simply have very low ones.
