The policy quoted states you can't return it even if it is opened.
"The following conditions are not acceptable for return, and will result in the merchandise being returned to you: Any desktop PC, notebook or tablet PC that has been opened"
Incredibly skeptical. As an e-mail administrator going on 10 years, I'd be very surprised if Google needed to use a typical login process to review your mail. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Much easier: Install any Linux distro in VMWare/VirtualBox, and use the CLI to download and install the dropbox daemon. Rinse and repeat. This only works for the CLI installation.
I went from 2.2GB --> 10.2GB in a few days doing this during my break.
This is also very much against the Dropbox ToS whereas the google adwords method is at best 'grey area'. I brought Dropbox more than 10 new customers. You didn't.
And might get banned for it... thats blatant referral program abuse..... it isnt "free if you are clever" its "free if you bring us new people in the door"
Sensationalist title, inaccurate and begging for extra clicks.
I'm not surprised to see this from a journalist, nor am I surprised to see this from Nokia. Nokia's offerings have been near non-existent since they moved from Symbian to WP7 development. If anything, this is a plus for Microsoft, who I'm sure would've been happy to fund this (if they did not).
I wouldn't say it's completely dead.
